How does a vacuum elevator actually work compared to a hydraulic elevator?
A vacuum elevator moves the cab using air pressure differential inside a self-supporting cylindrical shaft, while a hydraulic elevator uses a fluid-powered piston or cable-driven cab inside a conventionally framed shaft.
The vacuum system's self-supporting cylinder is the key structural difference — it doesn't require load-bearing shaft walls, only a reinforced floor opening at each level, which is why it retrofits into existing homes with less disruption. A hydraulic elevator needs a real framed shaft (or in some configurations, a smaller machine-room-less setup) capable of guiding and supporting the cab and its rail system through every floor it serves, which is more involved to add after a home is already built and finished.
