What's the real difference between a stairlift and a home elevator?
A stairlift carries a seated rider along a rail mounted to the existing staircase, while a home elevator moves an enclosed cab — large enough for a wheelchair, walker, or a person carrying items — vertically between floors independent of the stairs.
The practical dividing line is mobility equipment. A stairlift requires the rider to transfer out of a wheelchair onto the lift seat at the bottom and back into a second wheelchair (or the same one, walked up) at the top, which doesn't work for someone who can't safely transfer independently. An elevator cab is large enough to roll a wheelchair or walker directly in, which is why many St. Louis households facing a progressive mobility condition eventually move from a stairlift to a full elevator rather than starting there.
